Jane Lorraine Bernardo died on July 11, 2017 in Newport, Oregon. She was born in Newark, New Jersey on July 15, 1926 to Sidney Bernardo and Viola Zaiser Bernardo. Jane graduated from Art High School in Newark, New Jersey in January of 1945 and went to work in New York City, working in an office near Wall Street and the Brooklyn Bridge. In 1947, Jane enrolled in Providence Bible Institute and graduated in May of 1949 with a three-year general Bible degree. In September of 1949, Jane went to work for the Quidnessett Baptist Church in North Kingstown, Rhode Island. She served as the church secretary until December of 1952, when she began her career as a missionary to France. After 30 years of faithful service, Jane left France in 1982 and worked briefly at the Unevangelized Fields Mission home office in Pennsylvania. In 1984, she came to Newport, Oregon to care for her mother.
Jane Bernardo was a gifted artist; she loved working with water colors and was always glad to share her gift with others. Jane was known for her joyful spirit and concern for others. She was dearly loved by her friends and coworkers, and the congregations of the two churches, who she considered her family, Quidnessett Baptist Church in North Kingstown in Rhode Island and First Baptist of Newport, Oregon.
Jane was preceded in death by her father, Sidney Bernardo, her mother, Viola Kyle, and her brother, Jerry Bernardo. She is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Carlos and Pat Bernardo, a sister-in-law, Charlotte Bernardo, a nephew and his wife, Terry and Kathleen Bernardo, and nieces, Dee Dee and Carla. A memorial service is planned for 10:00 am on Friday the 21st at the First Baptist Church in Newport.
