James Grant Thompson 69, of Newport passed away September 23, 2017. He was the third child of Joseph and Eva, born December 2, 1947 in Des Moines, IA.
A native of Iowa, Jim grew up in Des Moines, where he graduated from Lincoln High School. Standing 6’ 7” Jim chose the PERFECT career, attending college to become a professional painter.
In 1985, Jim’s ‘whole world’ changed, he met the love of his life Shirley Senter, as Jim would say “Her presence is like a whole ‘nother world~ my very best world.” After moving to the Oregon Coast, Jim owned Thompson Painting, retiring in 2010. He loved retirement, spiritual yet a simple man, he enjoyed hiking, baking, adding to his and Shirley’s enormous rock collection, wood carving, milling around his well-manicured yard, walking their dog May, and not to forget, rearranging everything from furniture, lawn ornaments, to knick-knacks, anticipating Shirley’s laughter and smiles when she unsuspectedly noticed he had changed things around again. Opinionated and egotistical, discussions often became an education. Broad minded and inquisitive, Jim was enthralled with philosophy, religion, and metaphysics.
There wasn’t a musical instrument that Jim couldn’t play. A self-taught musician his passion was in writing and playing music. Jim’s greatest pleasure and unwavering commitment was loving Shirley. Life became worth living, when my heart met hers.
Jim will be forever remembered by his family and friends. He leaves behind 3 daughters, 1 brother, 1 sister, 7 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, his son, sister and grandson. Lastly, Jim loved children, children adored him and at his request, he wanted no services. He asked that in lieu of flowers, cards, food preparation you make a donation to The Samaritan House in Newport Oregon helping the children of our community.
