A small plane piloted by Newport Mayor Dean Sawyer crash-landed on the beach near Yaquina Bay State Park after 5 p.m. yesterday. A female passenger, Deborah Reasoner, 61, of Molalla, suffered serious injuries and was later transported by life flight helicopter to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland, according to Oregon State Police. Sawyer, 66, was at home resting on Tuesday with torn cartilage in his chest but was in good enough condition to post a Facebook update on the incident. A seven-year-old child passenger suffered minor injuries in the crash of the CESSNA 172, which had been on a whale-watching excursion to Depoe Bay. (More later on this developing story)
