NEWPORT — In July, Illingworth’s Gifts closed the doors at its building on the Nye Beach turnaround, where it has been located for years. But some of its previous inventory is still available, as the owners have rented space at Nostalgia Estate Sales – Vintage & Collectible Mall, located across Highway 101 from Newport City Hall.
Local businesswomen Andrea Fleck and Tina Davis purchased the Nye Beach shop at 735 NW Beach Drive seven years ago from the original owner, Marion Illingworth.
Tina Davis said the decision to close the shop at that location was twofold. Business was down as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the building’s owner, Doug Fitts, is trying to sell the building and was not wanting to renew the lease.
“Instead of just closing completely, we thought, ‘well, we’ll try this out,’” Davis said. “I think it was about the Fourth of July that we closed and went into the antique mall.
“We were kind of hoping it would be a way for us to keep our business going on a smaller scale,” Davis added. “But also because of the pandemic, they (antique mall) are not as busy as they normally are either, so it’s kind of a trial run.”
In the space they are renting, Davis and Fleck carry some antique furniture, kitchen items like dishtowels and aprons and other things, sweatshirts, jams and jellies, “and our cards that we used to carry. It’s just like a tiny version of what we had before,” Davis said.
Sales from all of the booths located in the antique mall are handled by the store’s staff. “They do everything. We just have to go in and make sure things look ok and whether we need to restock,” Davis said.
