When basketball season switches into the playoffs, a coach needs to have two speeches in his back pocket.
One congratulates the team on advancing to the next round. The second tells the team that their season is over, and to the seniors on the team, that their high school basketball careers are over.
The past two season, head coach Eddie Townsend has had to deliver the latter speech, one step away from reaching the state tournament and making the trip to Pendleton.
Nate Cross, Toledo’s only senior, made his way to the locker room with tears welling in his eyes following the game. It had been a rough day for Cross. In five minutes of action, Cross collected one rebound and one steal but picked up five fouls, the last being a technical foul. His day was over 90 seconds into the second half.
