Faith was the youngest of seven children born to Lee and Retta Hershberger, of Hubbard, Oregon. The family later resided in Independence and Canby, where Faith attended school and graduated from Canby High School in 1940.
In 1944, Faith married Lawrence “Larry” Pendergrass. They spent 28 days together before Larry was shipped to Panama to protect the canal. They did not see each other for over a year. During this time, Faith worked as a welding inspector at the Portland Shipyards.
When WWII was over, Faith and Larry started a family. They had four children in eight years and a new chapter began. They settled in Gresham in the early 1950s.
Faith was a committed volunteer and a talented homemaker. Her home was constantly a hub of activity, as she welcomed the friends of her children, the neighbors and the members of her community who stopped in for mid-morning coffee. Her cooking wasn’t bad either!
For a few years, Faith worked at Madison High School to assist with the expenses of helping all four of their children graduate from college.
After Larry’s retirement, they moved into their vacation home in Gleneden Beach. It was there that Faith noticed how many women were alone in her area. She and a friend got an idea to start a women’s group once a week at the Gleneden Beach Community Club. The group met on each Thursday of the week and was aptly named, “Thursdays.” This group continues to this day, chatting, quilting and doing good works for the community.
Faith had a great passion for life. She climbed Mt. Hood as a young woman, and she courageously faced major heart surgery at age 85. With an open mind, she fully lived every day of her life. Her love of Hawaii, gardening, antiques and people of all types will continue to illuminate all who knew her.
Faith is survived by her children, Dick Pendergrass (Janet) of Lake Oswego, Joy Pendergrass (Jim Roehm) of Portland, Char Holland (Tom) of Portland; daughter-in-law, Paula Sorensen of Portland; and six grandchildren. Faith was preceded in death by her husband; and son, Larry Pendergrass Jr.
