Ervin Carl Schlecht, Jr. “Carl”, 80, passed away from prostate cancer at his home with family by his side. Carl was born in Merrill, OR and resided in Polk County from the age of 6, graduating from Central High School, Independence in 1956.
He lived in his home in West Salem for the last 51 years.
Carl worked most of his life in the lumber industry (plywood), retiring in 1996. He enjoyed boating, deep sea fishing, gardening and spending time with Lois at Sawyer’s Landing in Newport. Carl was a very caring, loving man who was always ready to help family, friends and neighbors.
He will be dearly missed.
Carl is survived by his wife of almost 25 years, Lois Cochran Schlecht; step-son John Cochran (Chrissy); grandson Christopher Cochran (Stacey), Samuel and Sara; grandson Benjamin Cochran; step-son Ronald Cochran (Vickie); granddaughter Lisa Fowler, Hailee and Landon; grandson Kevin Cochran (Kristie); special chosen daughter Linda Rogers; granddaughters Chelsey Cole and Crystal Rogers; nephew Garry D. Lindstrom (Traci), William and Emma plus many extended family and friends.
Carl requested no service. Private interment will be in Newport. Donations can be made to Marion-Polk Food Share or Willamette Valley Hospice. The next time you catch a crab or land a halibut, raise a glass in his memory.
