In just four short years, Eager Beaver has gone from selling furniture and mattresses out of a small store in Newport’s Nye Beach District to owning and operating four stores around Lincoln County. The most recent addition is the Eager Beaver Furniture & Mattress Outlet, located at the Lincoln City Outlet Mall. A grand opening celebration was held at this store this past weekend.
“We produce more furniture, more mattresses in Lincoln County that anybody else,” said Abe Silvonen, who, along with his wife, Mariah, own and operate the four stores. “We are the largest furniture/mattress dealer now. That’s what this fourth store puts us to. We have more rotations, more square feet, more product in furniture and mattresses than any other company in the county.”
Silvonen described how the new store came about. “We’ve been thinking about it, we actually looked at a few locations, and just lo and behold, two or three months ago, one of the main representatives from the outlet mall that worked for corporate wandered in our store and said, ‘Hey, are you guys interested in Lincoln City?’”
At the time, the Silvonens had a lot going on, including a large remodeling project on their home, but the opportunity was simply too good to pass up. “Obviously it’s just the next phase,” said Silvonen. “We have a lot of clients up here already. Our delivery range was Florence to Pacific City — we were up here two, three times a week.” And a store at the outlet mall sees a great deal of foot traffic. Last week, during spring break, “there were literally thousands of people walking by these doors every hour,” he said.
The new store, previously occupied by Reebok, is located in the center island of the mall. Silvonen has created a 7,500-square-foot showroom, and with some onsite warehouse space “we have around 10,000 square feet total,” he said.
“And we’ve shifted our gears,” added Silvonen. “We’re not just a home furnishing store any more. We have so much really cool wall art and home décor and accessories … half of our stuff you can throw in the back of your car. So really, that’s kind of our demographic now. The people that are coming out here are looking for a unique, handmade gift. They’re looking for a really cool, unique, themed lamp, something fun, and we do that.”
But Eager Beaver carries quality home furnishings, as well. “We’re bringing the big guns as far as our mattress lineup,” said Silvonen. “We’re bringing Tempur-Pedic, we’re bringing the number one hybrid in the world from Sealy Posturepedic, we’re bringing in the stuff that Lincoln City doesn’t have, that basically the rest of the coast doesn’t have.” He said Eager Beaver’s mattress lineup rivals that of the best downtown Portland mattress stores, “and at better prices because I’m a stickler for pricing. I will sell at the absolute best prices possible that the manufacturers allow us to when there’s rules. When there’s no rules, I really go crazy.”
From the start, Eager Beaver has operated on a philosophy of value at every level. “You sell good quality products for good prices, and give people more for their money, and they like that,” said Silvonen. “Imagine that.”
Eager Beaver also offers free delivery. “We will never charge for delivery,” Silvonen said. “It’s a huge deal, value at every level and free delivery.” And with the opening of the Lincoln City store, they have expanded their delivery parameters. They now will go north into Tillamook and east to areas like Grand Ronde, Dallas and Monmouth. “That’s something new, we’re going to be servicing into the northwestern valley now,” he said.
For people who may have missed out on Eager Beaver’s grand opening of its Lincoln City store, they can still get in on the special deals. “We’re actually going to continue our grand-opening sale the whole month of April,” said Silvonen. “Basically, everything in the store is on sale.”
