NEWPORT — The Newport Dungies American Legion team is undefeated in its first two outings, downing the Newport Cubs Tuesday, June 11, in a practice romp, 13-5, and eating the lunch of the Portland Eastsiders 13-1 on Wednesday.
The Dungies ended the game early on the 10-point rule in the warm-up against the Cubs, this year’s Oregon West division champions. Left-handed hurler Mason McAlpine, a 2019 Toledo graduate, flexed his throwing arm from atop the elevated mound at Frank Wade Field while good fielding and batting held the youngsters in check. Catcher Eli Demello was the standout field general for the game.
The Dungies opened their regular season on a high note by defeating the Eastside Cutters at Madison High School in Portland, 13-1.
The Dungies, sponsored by Newport American Legion Post 116, will host the Kaizer Dirtbags on Monday, June 17, in a doubleheader at 2 and 5 p.m. The three-game series concludes Wednesday in Salem, 4 p.m. at Western Oregon State University.
The Dungies will return to WOSU Thursday through Saturday for the Willamette Classic.
