Drum circle continues online events

The regular gatherings of the Newport Community Drum Circle in the gazebo at Don & Ann Davis Park in Newport were put on hold due to the COVID pandemic, but organizer Chandler Davis has kept the beat alive through virtual events.

Billed as a world beat rhythm celebration and virtual global drum circle, Davis invites people to join him on Zoom or Facebook Live most Saturdays, from 4 to 7 p.m.

“Watch, listen and play along from the comfort and anonymity of your living room,” Davis said. “The special link appears automatically (and exclusively) on my personal Facebook page as soon as I activate the live feed from Zoom shortly after 4 p.m., or contact me about joining us live from anywhere in the world as a special guest on the virtual zoom stage.”

People can contact Davis directly via email at [email protected] or on Facebook Messenger.

“Guests do not necessarily need to be accomplished players, and our intent is to be as inclusive as possible, but the inherent technical limitations of the online environment make it impossible for us to play together simultaneously as we ordinarily would in either our drum circle or performance formats,” Davis said.

He said the weekly shows are currently attracting 1,000 to 2,000 (to more than 5,000) viewers each week — or “views” in Facebook parlance, which do not always indicate separate individual viewers.

All the archived programs are available to view at no cost on the Newport Community Drum Circle Facebook page. A complete live recording of each program is also available a day or so after the broadcast on the Drum Circle Facebook page, Davis’ personal Facebook page and popular events pages locally and globally.

Davis asks people to help “keep this music alive and free” by donating whatever they can afford in the virtual tip jars at www.PayPal.me/CDdrumman or www.Venmo.com/Chandler-Davis-68 using a credit or debit card.
