Derek Ryan Unland

April 8, 1988 – June 5, 2017

Derek Ryan Unland, 29, of San Luis Obispo, CA died on June 5, 2017. He was born April 8, 1988 in Long Beach, CA, the son of Warren and Lily Unland. He was valedictorian at Newport High School in 2005, where he was a member of the chess club, and graduated in Mechanical Engineering at Cal Poly University in 2010, where he was a member of the Cal Poly Wheelmen and Triathlon Team. He was employed as a Design Engineer at SRAM and designed road front derailleur’s for bicycles.
Derek lived life to the fullest, discovering his joy, in cycling. He was most often found with a bike, whether it was around town, hitting trails all over California, or as far as Italy. He excelled in all sorts of competitions— road racing, mountain biking, triathlons and half marathons. He also had a passion for photography and loved to take pictures of his travels and his friends. As a doting uncle, he enjoyed building Lego’s with his niece. He was quiet, thoughtful and kind with a quirky sense of humor that was all Derek. Always thoughtful in his approach with his friendships, Derek was an active listener, generous with his time, and would do anything for you. If you knew Derek, no matter for how long, you knew he cared for you. He was a steadfast friend and beloved by those who knew him.
Derek is survived by his mother Lily, his sister Carla, and his niece Addison. He is also survived by several beloved aunts, uncles and cousins. He is preceded in death by his father Warren, Aunt Beverly Frost, Aunt Sun Gook Fong, Uncle Fook-On Lee, and his maternal and paternal grandparents.
His viewing will be at Reis Family Mortuary, 991 Nipomo St, San Luis Obispo, CA 93401 on Saturday, June 17, 2017 from 10am-12pm; this is open house style. Following this, from 1-4pm, the celebration of his life will be at SRAM, 4720 Allene Way, San Luis Obispo, CA. Please share stories you have of Derek. He was a very special guy and touched a lot of people. This is open to anyone.
