On July 19, 2017, Dean Morris Failor passed away in his daughter’s home in Springfield, Oregon surrounded by the love of his family.
Born on February 27, 1941 in Seattle, Washington, Dean resided in South Beach, Oregon since 1990. He only recently retired from his role as a co-owner of Windermere West Coast Properties. Prior to his nearly 30 year career in real estate, Dean served as the general manager of the institutional industries program for the State of Washington Department of Corrections in Walla Walla and then along the Olympic Peninsula. He also spent a decade as a union carpenter and general contractor in the Medford and Walla Walla areas, skills which were invaluable to his real estate career. Following two years of service in the Army in the early 1960s, he spent nearly a decade selling insurance for Northwestern National Life. Dean graduated from Sandy High School and attended classes at Portland State University.
Dean was a Master Gardener with a particular love of roses and growing his own vegetables. He developed the extensive gardens at his South Beach home with the help of his beloved wife, Charyl Failor, who predeceased him in 2000.
Dean had a passion for the visual and performing arts, supporting local artists through the purchase of numerous pieces over the years, and by serving on the board of the Newport Symphony Orchestra -- all the way back to its days as the Yaquina Chamber Orchestra.
Dean’s other love was dogs, having cared for 10 of them over his adult life. Most were rescues, and the past 5 were bassett hounds whose oversize personalities were a wonderful foil to Dean’s calm and quiet demeanor.
Dean lived a life of integrity, compassion, loyalty, spirituality, and complete kindness. He was loved by his customers, his co-workers, members of the community, and his family. He will be remembered for his deep laugh, wonderful hugs, words of wisdom, and quiet stoicism.
Dean was predeceased by parents Ralph Morris Failor of Phoenix, Arizona and Hazel Ann Leatherman (Sonneson) of Beaverton, son Erik Morris Failor of Walla Walla, sister Nancy Zurcher of Beaverton, and wife Charyl Failor of South Beach.
Dean is survived by daughters Cynthia Failor of Springfield, Oregon and Amanda Everse of South Burlington, Vermont; grandchildren Evan McOwen of Springfield, Oregon, Megan McOwen of New Orleans, Louisiana, Johannes Everse and Helena Everse of South Burlington, Vermont; great-grandchildren Finn McOwen and Lorelei McOwen of Walla Walla, Washington; niece Suzanne Zurcher-Tompkins of La Pine, Oregon and nephew Lawrence Zurcher of Lake Oswego, Oregon.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 26th at 2pm at the Newport Performing Arts Center, 777 W. Olive Street, Newport, OR 97365. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter or the Newport Symphony Orchestra.
