Danny was born in Portland to the late Daniel and Marie O’Donnell and raised on the Oregon coast. After graduating from Waldport High in (1967), Danny enlisted in the US Navy and served in the Navy Seabees as a cook. He ended his tour of duty in 1972 on the USS Higbee being honorably discharged a few weeks after the ship took enemy fire during the Vietnam War.
Danny worked for the Forest Service from 1972-1992 starting as a seasonal firefighter, taking his first permanent position as a brush cutter operator and ending his career as a Culinary Arts Supervisor for the Job Corps under the US Forest Service and the Department of Labor. Danny left the civil service to pursue his dream of owning and operating a restaurant. He opened DanO’s café in the Waldport community and operated it for 23 years until an unfortunate accident forced Danny into early retirement. During that time, Danny enjoyed taking part and giving back to the community he grew up in.
Any free time Danny could find, he was out on Oregon’s waters fishing. Fishing was his lifelong passion. His daughters remember many of trips to Diamond and East Lake, being woke up before sunrise and placed on a boat so they could be the first out on the water. Danny watched as his youngest landed her first Steelhead on the Alsea River and she couldn’t remember a more proud look on her father’s face. Danny spent many hours on the waters with friends and family making great memories with each excursion.
Danny’s daughters would like to thank the many friends and family for all their support of their father over some rough years. They are forever grateful for all your love and support of their father.
Danny is survived by his wife, Laura Lewis O’Donnell, Newport; sister Colleen Pompel, Portland; brother Tim, Newport; daughters Marti, Apple Valley, MN; Tana Johnson (Tyler), Stevensville, MT; Amber, Missoula, MT; and three grandchildren (Aveya, Abby, Will).
He is preceded in death by his parents (Daniel and Marie), brother-in-law, Matthew Pompel; and younger brother, David.
