LA GRANDE — To advance to the first round of the playoffs, all the Newport girls basketball team had to do was make an eight-hour trip, through the snow, and beat the La Grande Tigers.
A fast start to the game propelled the Cubs to a 52-35 win to make it to the round of 16.
“We came out of the gates really well,” said head coach Steve Sain. “We jumped out to a 16-3 lead and just played confidently and held that lead throughout the rest of the game.”
The win was a big step for the girls’ program. Three times in the past five seasons the Cubs have qualified for a play-in game, but all three times they failed to win.
“This year we really wanted to prove ourselves,” said junior Madi Hargett. “Finally getting that play-in game and winning it and advancing further that we have in a really long time was really fun.”
