Cubs start fast in opener

There were great moments, there were down moments for the Newport Cubs boys basketball team in their season opener against Elmira. It was a typical first game of the season type game where Newport (1-0) held on to beat Elmira (0-1) 70-55 to start the season on a winning note. “Tonight was a great lesson for our team,” said head coach Doug Sain. “Every game is going to be competitive and you need to play your heart out and you need to execute for four quarters, we played about 18 minutes of good basketball, Elmira battled and came back. We just lost focus, we stopped talking and we lost our identity.” Before the game had started, Sain had challenged his team to communicate with each other on the court, and they did just that. Newport defense swarmed Elmira which led to transition buckets for the Cubs, who took a 46-19 lead into halftime. “We were defending and we were getting stops,” Sain said. “When we are getting stops then we run and push the tempo, then they went to a zone and that slowed us down a little bit, the ball just stuck. We play best when the ball moves.”
