NEWPORT — In five of six competitions, this winter the Newport cheerleading squad has emerged victorious.
At 9:35 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10 at the Memorial Coliseum in Portland, the Cubs will perform their two and a half minute routine with a state title on the line.
“They’re ready,” said head coach Jessica Arnsdorf. “We’ve completed all year, we’ve only not placed first once, and that was by 0.1 points, so we are feeling really good going into state.”
By winning five of six competitions, including being named the Grand Champion — the highest scoring team of all the divisions — at the Sheldon Cheer Invitational, the Cubs have to perform with the pressure of being one of the favorites entering the state competition.
“I think they feed off of it,” Arnsdorf said. “They look forward to having everyone want to watch them, they are good under pressure. They actually do better under pressure.”
