Cubs are on their way to the state tournament

It was a hurdle that the Cubs haven’t been able to get over in over a decade: Winning a playoff game and advancing to the state tournament. The No. 6 Newport boys basketball team finally cleared that with a resounding 19-point, 73-54 win over No. 11 Sutherlin the first round of the 4A playoffs on Saturday, March 3 at Spangler Court. Senior Kye Blaser kicked things off with eight of his game-high 25 points in the first quarter. Justin Plechaty extended the lead scoring all 19 of his points in the second and third quarter, while senior Jose Ponciano squashed a would-be Bulldog comeback with all 11 of his points in the fourth quarter. “All year long Kye has been consistent all year, he’s the player of the year in the conference and, in my opinion, in the state,” said head coach Doug Sain. “But every game we have two guys that just come through on the offensive end who come in and knock down shots, and tonight, it was Justin and Jose.”
