COVID stats in China versus U.S.

How many COVID-19 deaths have there been as of Sept. 29? China: 4,634, population 1.39 billion; United States: 206,000, population 339 million. (Google search: "How many people have died from COVID-19 in China?" and Google search: "How many people have died from COVID-19 in the U.S.?")

Where did the COVID-19 pandemic start? China (Google search: "Where did COVID-19 get its start?").

If this so-called pandemic started in China and it won't be stopped until there is a vaccine, how can the U.S. have 44 times more deaths than China, even though it has a billion more people? Is the Chinese culture and medical system really 44 times better than those in the United States? To quote a line from the play “Hamlet,” by William Shakespeare, "Me thinks something is rotten in the state of Denmark."
