A new business called CORE394 opened in Waldport in early November, providing 24-hour access to a fitness center and also offering a tanning salon and barbershop services. It is located at 650 NW Hemlock St., at the corner of Highway 101 and Highway 34.
Kayla Snow is the owner of CORE394, and she said the first part of the name comes from the fact that it is located in the core of Waldport and that a major focus of fitness training is on the core muscles. The 394, she said, comes from the last three digits of Waldport’s zip code. Together, they offer a good description of her new enterprise.
This business also breathed new life into a building that had been sitting empty for years.
“It’s been vacant for 13 years,” said Snow. Renovation work was started last February, with the expectation that it would be ready to open within about three months. But as is often the case, the remodeling process took longer than anticipated.
“We put in flooring, insulation, drywall, paint. My dad built the loft, as well,” said Snow. Her father, Rick Snow, owns Hilltop Café-Bistro in Waldport, but he previously was a contractor, which was extremely helpful in getting the building ready for occupancy, she said.
A grand opening celebration was held at CORE394 on Nov. 7, attended by a large number of the gym members, along with others from the community.
Gym membership provides people with access to the equipment 24 hours a day, seven days a week, said Snow. “There’s a key access in the back. It’s got a shower available. We have music playing 24 hours.”
The loft in the gym area contains the cardio machines, and on the lower level are the strength machines and the free weights. “I have a little bit of everything,” said Snow.
For those who want to see what the fitness center has available, Snow offers a free trial day. And there are a variety of membership options — weekly, monthly or annual. “And you can bring guests in after hours — there’s a drop-in fee,” she said.
In designing the fitness center, Snow said she wanted it to be a place for people of all ages, and she has been getting a good response.
“I’ve had a lot of awesome feedback,” she said. “I’ve had a lot of younger people tell me how it’s their new favorite spot, which is awesome. And also, probably 40 percent of my customers are 65 and older, which is cool, too, because I was trying to hit all the spots and make sure everybody’s comfortable.”
Prior to opening CORE394, the owner of the building asked Snow how many members she thought the fitness center would attract. “I told him 200 my first year, and I’m at 215 and it hasn’t even been a month. It’s been amazing,” she said.
The fitness center occupies one side of the building, and the other side contains two tanning beds and the barbershop — a large sliding door closes off the two sides of the building after hours.
In the barbershop, “I do all men’s haircuts,” said Snow. “There are complimentary drinks, and we do the hot/warm steam towels and treatments.” After graduating from Waldport High School in 2009, Snow attended the Institute of Beauty School in Eugene, “and I’ve been doing barbering since then,” she said.
In January, a stylist will be joining her at the business, and “she does all women’s hair,” said Snow.
Another addition coming soon will be an infrared sauna. “That should be up and running in two weeks,” Snow said. “Instead of heat from the water, which gets muggy, it’s dry heat from infrared lights. There’s no steam, so you can bring a book, a tablet or whatever.
“It’s really good for your joints and your skin, weight loss and everything,” she added. The sauna can accommodate up to three people, and sessions range from 15 minutes to an hour.
The barbershop, tanning beds and soon, infrared sauna are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
