Constance Jean (Hocken) Killion February 23, 1943-July 28, 2020

Connie passed away July 28, 2020 in her Newport home at the age of 77, surrounded by her loving family. Constance was born on February 23, 1943 to Bill and Jean (Altree) Hocken in Newport where she spent her childhood roaming the beach, always collecting shells and rocks.

After graduating from Newport High School, she went to OHSU School of Dentistry to become a hygienist. She completed her education and training in 1964, and eventually moved back to Newport in 1978 with her young family. In 1980, she opened The Cape House as a co-owner where she enjoyed sharing and teaching her passion of cooking and creating a meal together with others. Later, she returned to work as a hygienist, to complete a nearly 40-year career: she regularly told her patients to “floss or die” (periodontal disease is linked to heart disease).

Connie appreciated live music and had classical music playing in her house 24/7. She enjoyed gardening, reading, and time spent at the beach. She was famous for her cinnamon rolls and well-buttered toast. She was of the opinion that chocolate cake should be rich and dark. She also enjoyed an occasional whisky, bourbon, or frozen margarita. Hawaii and the Cook Islands were some of her favorite travel destinations; she greatly admired their natural beauty.

Connie had a mischievous smile when she did something a little silly or naughty. A great day for her was taking a car trip with the windows down (or when she was younger the top off). She was generous with her knowledge of the topics she was passionate about and taught many how to can tuna. She loved taking people to the aquarium or tide pools. She especially loved time spent with her grandsons who adored her, and would always bake them each their own batch of cookies.

Connie is survived by her two daughters, Kaari Killion and Jen Jane, formerly Neumann; grandsons, Oso and Levin Neumann; sister, Vicki (Richard) Grusing; and partner, Robin Comstock. Preceded in death by her brother, Butch Hocken.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to the Oregon Coast Aquarium or Oregon Coast Council for the Arts.
