Conflict management services available

As a member of Lincoln Community Dispute Resolution, I appreciate and concur with Sheriff Landers’ July 29 Law Enforcement Tip of the Week. Conflict is present in everyday life and is an opportunity for change. While Sheriff Landers focuses on anger as a possible result of conflict that can lead to violence, there are many other kinds of conflict to be considered and managed. Managing conflict and stress in all areas of one’s life has become ever more important as the pandemic impacts our community and beyond.

Lincoln Community Dispute Resolution is a small, nonprofit organization that has utilized volunteers to provide conflict management services to individual and organizations in Lincoln County since 1997.

We offer mediation with trained volunteers. Mediation is a method of settling disputes with the assistance of a neutral mediator who helps the parties talk about the problem and work towards a creative solution acceptable to all. Mediation is used in all kinds of disputes including neighborhood problems, workplace, consumer issues, family, landlord and tenant disputes and small claims cases. It works because it’s voluntary, confidential, informal and free of legal red tape, and empowering to everyone involved.

We also offer services and programs for youth because we believe that a harmonious community begins with children. Everyone benefits when children learn communication skills, empathy, kindness, conflict management and accountability. Some of our programs have included: restorative justice in schools for all ages, Teen Justice Panels for youth that are in trouble with the law, and, together with one of our partners, Partnership Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse, Youth Leadership Academies for students from all over the county.

The conflict management process is:

  • Explore the situation: talk and listen to each other.
  • Define the problem: what does each person want and need?
  • Brainstorm: list ideas that might solve at least part of the problem.
  • Look for agreement: create an agreement to try.
  • Build a plan: decide who will do what, and when it will be done.
  • Do it: try it out.
