Column: the heart of a champ

Back in 1995 as the Houston Rockets celebrated their second-straight NBA Finals after beating the Orlando Magic, then-Houston head coach Rudy Tomjanovich grabbed a microphone and made this proclamation: “Never underestimate the heart of a champion,” he said. That quote became cemented in my mind when I watched my beloved Green Bay Packers squander a nine-point lead in the final two minutes of NFC Championship game against the defending Super Bowl Champion Seattle Seahawks. Green Bay had dominated that game for 58 minutes at Centurylink Field, they appeared to be Super Bowl bound. But when the stakes in that game were at its peak, it was the Seahawks who rose to the occasion and handed the Packers a crushing defeat to advance to their second-straight Super Bowl. The Seahawks weren’t ready to relinquish their title as Champions. And neither is the 2017 Newport soccer team, who have found ways to win in each of their three playoff games. On Saturday the Cubs will go to defend their title at Liberty High School in Hillsboro against Stayton — a team that’s beaten the Cubs twice this season.
