Column: ‘One game at a time’ is the sports cliche I choose not to follow


There is no escaping cliches in the sports world. If you are wondering what a sports cliche is, just watch any college football coach being interviewed. They are filled with them. The “offense sells tickets, defense wins championships,” “we have to establish the run game,” “we’re not going to stop battling” and “it’s not over until it’s over” I believe are chapters in a required book that every coach must read before they are given their whistles. One of the most common is the “we are taking it one game at a time” phrase that players and coaches are routinely guilty of using. As Newport begins its quest for a state title, senior Kye Blaser tiptoed around the question about advancing in the playoffs.
