Bringing back the buoy

A gong buoy marking the channel broke loose from its mooring at the entrance of Newport’s Yaquina Bay last Saturday, washing ashore at South Beach State Park. Oregon State Parks and the U.S. Coast Guard, with the assistance of Big River Excavating, retrieved the buoy on Tuesday, Jan. 14. “Coast Guard Cutter Elm is charged with maintaining the buoys in Yaquina Bay,” said Steve Feldscher, with the U.S. Coast Guard District 13 Waterways Management Team on Thursday afternoon, Jan 16. “They just got underway with a replacement buoy. Weather permitting. it will be replaced Friday morning.” (Top photo by Cheri Brubaker. Photo below courtesy of Oregon State Parks)
