The district meet was a bit of a homecoming for Sean O’Meara.
The senior returned to the Astoria pool where he grew up swimming. In his final district meet, O’Meara finished first in all three of his events — 100 and 200 freestyle, as well as the 200 freestyle relay — to help the Newport boys swim team win its seventh consecutive conference title.
“My first districts I DQ’d out of the meet, and so this year it was my final year so I had to step it up a bit,” O’Meara said. “I felt like I did pretty well and my team did amazing, we blew it out of the water by almost 200 points because of them.”
Winning at districts has become almost expected for Newport — the district winning streak has nearly reached a decade.
“They’ve really created a culture of hard work and working together as a team, not necessarily putting the individual first but realizing what we can do together as a team. That culture of hard work and team atmosphere has been passed on from generation to generation.”
