Senior Ray Darrington isn’t just the best post for the Taft H.S. boys basketball team — he’s the best in the league,
Ray came as a surprise package to the Tigers after playing non-prep AAU basketball. After joining the squad as a junior, he didn’t get much playing time. Ray’s talent emerged this season, however, suddenly positioning him a team captain and future junior college prospect.
His attention-getting play comes at a price most kids couldn’t imagine: Ray works after school, carries a full academic load and recently lost everything in a home fire. While those daunting pressures might break others, they’ve produced a diamond-quality athlete in Ray Darrington.
“Ray’s a fantastic human being with a big heart,” remarked Coach Andy Morgan. “He’ll knock a guy down and then help him off the floor. He’s going to be a bright, shining star somewhere, someday.”
