ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: Patrick Shawver propels Siletz Valley wrestling

Patrick Shawver wins

Senior grappler Patrick Shawver helped propel the Siletz Valley Warriors to win the 1A State Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 26., and is a News-Time Athlete of the Week.

Patrick is an inspiration to his teammates, according to head coach Reggie Butler, Jr., and proof that feeder programs can lay the foundation for a winning organization. One of the last graduates of the “Mat Club” before the outfit lost steam several years ago, Patrick was just seven years old when he started his wrestling career.

This tough young veteran is the talk of the 1A Conference, where he has placed first in four of seven tourneys and second in all the others. Fans can watch this dynamic wrestler in action Friday against Vernonia or at District Finals in Toledo Feb. 15.

Coach Butler said a decade of training has given this young wrestler “good balance” and a work ethic that makes him a leader on the team. His presence is credited for attracting eight top athletes to the squad this year.
