The Oregon Coast Council for the Arts presents the exhibition, “Layered & Stitched: Selected Quilts from the Oregon Coastal Quilters Guild,” from now through July 27 in the Upstairs Gallery at the Newport Visual Arts Center.

The exhibit includes 11 award-winning quilters and serves as a lead-in to the guild’s 29th annual quilt show, “Quilts by the Sea,” held at the Newport Recreation Center during the first week of August.

Participating quilters include Jean Amundsen, Susan Cronewett, Denise DeMarie, Karen Donobedian, Benita Goodheart, Linda MacKown, Tina McCann, Judy McCoy, Jane Szabo, Janet Webster and Gloria Zirges.

“Creating art quilts allows me to combine my love of fabric and ‘playing’ with fabric with my interest in art,” said Zirges. “My pieces are usually representational and based on a photograph. They tell a narrative that is important to me or demonstrate my love of the natural world.”

The Newport Visual Arts Center is located at 777 NW Beach Drive. Regular gallery hours are from noon to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.

The Oregon Coastal Quilters Guild was founded in 1991 to promote fellowship among quilters, to promote knowledge and appreciation of quilts and quilt making through educational programs and meetings and to sponsor and support quilting activities. The guild currently has 190 members based primarily in Lincoln County.
