Art Fridays return for winter session

Seven-part series runs Feb. 8–March 22

Art Fridays, the Oregon Coast Council for the Art’s popular visual art youth program at the Newport Visual Arts Center, returns for the winter 2019 session. The seven-part series will maintain a focus on the “FUNdamentals of Drawing & Painting.” Led by instructors Marcy Kenyon and Eileen Hearne, students will create still-lifes, self-portraits, human form drawings, collages and more.


Art Fridays Winter 2019 class schedule

  • Feb. 8 and 15: “Winter Warm Up and Draw” —
Learn to sketch what you see with line drawing and shading with charcoal. Bring your own object.
  • Feb. 22: “Let the Figure Move You” — Learn to express the movement and gesture of the human form.
  • March 1: “Scratch Your Head Off: A Self-Portrait” — Learn to create mood with shadow and light.
  • March 8: “Plan Your Work and Work Your Plan” — Arrange shapes in a composition and blend with values to create form with color.
  • March 15: “Mix It Up” — Express yourself using collage, stencils and paint.
  • March  22: “Painting Reflections On Water” — Reflect on new skills with a final project.

Art Friday classes are geared toward fifth through eight graders (10 to 14 years of age). Classes are from 3:45 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. at the Newport Visual Arts Center, 777 NW Beach Dr. The cost is $12 per class, or $72 for a series of seven classes (scholarships are available). All classes limited to 15 students.
