NORTH MARION — Three talented players from the Newport High School baseball roster will join Oregon’s elite on the diamond at North Marion H.S. Saturday for the Oregon 4A All-Star Series.
Tapped for North Team All-Star duty was senior phenom Jacob Dobmeier, who hurls fastballs and curves at major league velocities and is the reigning Oregon West Conference Pitcher of the Year; senior sensation Ryan Torres, a triple threat who pitched, fielded at first and third bases and batted .422 for the season; and senior outfielder Jacob Riley, who counted only one error in 24 regular-season games while driving in 26 runs on a .380 batting average.
Gladstone led the North Team with four All-Star picks, followed by three each by Newport and North Marion. Other north schools fielding talent are Banks, Astoria, Philomath and Seaside. The South Team includes Ontario, Marist, LaGrande, Phoenix, Cottage Grove, Estacada, Sweet Home, Henley, Baker, Junction City and Mazama.
The series marks the first opportunity in 39 years that Lincoln County prep baseball fans will be able to attend the games without a costly road trip to Roseburg, historic site of the event. Athletic officials made the change to North Marion, near Salem, because 4A classifications shifted to the Willamette Valley.
The baseball facility at North Marion is described as a “hidden gem” by school officials, who recently installed 100 buckets seats behind home plate and new wooden bleachers.
The first game of the series is Saturday, June 15, at 7 p.m. The Sunday doubleheader begins at noon. The game will be broadcast live on Facebook, tagged Oregon 4A All-Star Series.
